SURREY 65-32 FAIRLANDS A
SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER
A storming start to the season for the Surrey netball team with a 65-32 home win against Fairlands in a September scorcher.
The team has worked hard over the summer with fitness sessions as well as adapting to a new Coach in the club which has provided a new structure to the team and training. There have been some changes to the squad over the summer with existing members sadly departing to new countries but we’re excited to see some new joiners being added to the mix to fill those gaps and shape the team moving forward. A key highlight for this season is the development within the club with existing members moving up from the Kingston teams to join Surrey.
This season starts with a home game vs Fairlands who are a new opponent for Park. The team came out strong with new joiner Elin Murphy at C, utilising her speed through court supported by Hannah McNally at WA, the two players worked together to bring the ball through court to Fran Bennett & Tara Ellis in the circle, with the experienced pairing making quick pops to help Park quickly take the lead with the team up 17-8 in quarter one. A change came at half-time with new joiner Katie Wilberforce taking to the court to play a ‘raging’ goal attack. Katie has really impressed in trials demonstrating her flying drives & shooting abilities. Unfortunately, a wobbly landing led to Katie having to go off injured in the 3rd quarter, so we’re hoping for a quick recovery for her.
Park continued to pile on the pressure throughout the game winning every quarter with a consistent goal volume for each side throughout. Defensively Park applied the pressure throughout the match with Lucy Paterson taking on the role of GD, though normally more of a centre court player, Lucy’s strength & speed have aided her stepping into the circle alongside Hannah Wallis at GK. With Jude Lewis at WD the defensive unit were able to recognise the oppositions tactics & adapt to shut down the circle edge drive and the movement round the circle to pick up intercepts and force the held ball calls. The final score saw Park win 65-32 denying the opposition a point for being within half.
Club development was a real shining star today with the POMs going to two players who have recently moved up from the Kingston teams, Jude Lewis at WD & Lucy Paterson at GD. A brilliant start to the season with a full team performance.
