For the fifth year running Rosslyn Park are running the Middlesex Under 12 League.
The Middlesex U12 Championships was created seven years ago to help young players develop their Rugby and help bridge the divide between Mini and Youth Rugby. The intention is to provide a format that enables a better Rugby experience for teams and players as well as helping facilitate a better alignment of teams when they transition to the combined Middlesex & Herts Youth Leagues at U13. From the initial experiment the U12 Championship has gone from strength to strength. 2016-17 sees the largest entry to date.
The format for the Championship is unique with 3 weekend qualifying rounds played through the season ahead of a Finals Day in March at WASPS. Each round comprises 2 games of 30 minutes played as a three-way fixture. The results of these games are compiled and points awarded for the results.
Similar competitions are held in other counties to determine their County ‘Cup’.
The final positions of clubs has always been used to help establish the League entries for clubs choosing to enter the Herts/Middx League at U13. U13 and U14 League rugby ended for the 2016/17 season onwards under the new RFU competition rules but the rankings are still used to appropriately group teams.
The process started in September with clubs formally entering their teams followed by the Draw held on Monday 17th October. The three weekend rounds start in November.
Round 1 – Sunday 13th November (Fall back date – Sunday 20th November)
Round 2 – Sunday 4th December (Fall back date – Sunday 11th December)
Round 3 – Sunday 15th January (Fall back date – Sunday 22nd January)
Middlesex Finals (Wasps) – Sunday 19th March 2016
Middlesex Rugby decided to continue using the finishing positions to determine who plays who at Wasps on Finals Day.
On the day each U12 team will still play two decent length matches against opponents who fared similarly over the course of the season.
